I loved this post and literally laughed out loud reading it! The hype around the Margaux was captured perfectly and, honestly, it's "the next birkin" in the sense that people are shouting that it is. There are countless options for this type of silhouette, especially when including vintage, that I want people to stop clamoring for the name of it and just buy the silhouette they like best.

Deeply LOVE this post (as I love all of yours!) For me, the jury’s still out. Nothing is going to replace the Birkin, but I think others, i.e. those without Birkins, will talk so loudly we will almost only hear how the Margaux is IT.

Sarah I always appreciate your support and kindness! 💕 I find this fashion/cultural moment of the challenger vs the established icon more interesting than anything else. Thankfully for almost everyone there are great vintage and resale options on both sides!

Yes! Not only is it better for your wallet and the planet, as you note by and large the quality just isn’t there for modern options any longer. The things I use the most are decades old and still going; almost all my modern versions are not as good

Thank you! I bought it on a bit of a whim, but it's had great staying power in my wardrobe.

Off-tangent, but I saw a really beautiful vintage Kelly in Paris once - you could see the signs of use but it had been well cared for, and the leather gleamed like polished wood but felt soft as butter. The boutique owner said it was probably from the 70s. Wonder if a Margaux would age that well!

Your red Celine "Bolide" is delightful. I sometimes browse TRR just to look at bags from the 2000s and 2010s to see how they have aged, and my current favourite is the Celine Edge bag (a Phoebe era design), which I had always loved back in the day but could not justify. They feel like a modern take on the Kelly and if I were in the market for a ladylike bag now, I would snap one up.

Oooh yeah those OG vintage Hermes with true patina are really special. Sometimes I think The Row accessories line is just an homage cover band for all of MK/Ashley's favorite Hermes pieces. The appeal of the Margaux seems to be the slouch factor and it looks designed to smoosh and slouch even more over time. But there is still something about the allure of the handmade quality to H that endures.

And I know the Edge! You're right, it is very Kelly-like in the shape and on the resale market so much more price-palatable than original retail. This reminds me, I've been meaning to experiment with punking up how I wear my 'ladylike' bags. Capote swan is fun but riffing on it is even better 😄

I love pre-Phoebe Celine as well. I have a 70s era black/quilted mini flap that’s my go-to for dressy occasions, and have had a couple of other bags in the past. Beautiful quality.

A couple of vintage Celine jersey polos are on my perpetual wishlist.

Ooh 70s era is definitely OG. I think the MK era of Celine is underrated actually. And shopping designer archives via vintage is always such a fun and fascinating process of discovery.
